In 2004 an article in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) suggested that certain types of brain lesions may be caused by migraine symptoms.

An earlier study, done in the Netherlands, looked for two different kinds of brain lesions (braiin lesions are small patches of dead brain cells). One of these lesions is sometimes called a 'little stroke' and involves a blocked blood supply. The other type of lesion is frequently seen in people with Alzheimer's or multiple sclerosis.

The study found that both men and women who get migraine headaches were 7 to 16 times as likely to have the stroke type of lesion in the part of the brain that feeds blood to the back of the brain.

The study also found that WOMEN who get migraine headaches were significantly more likely to have the lesions associated with Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis around the ventricles of the brain. Apparently, migraine symptoms involve brain trauma which directly kills brain tissue. It also seems clear that the more frequent the migraine headache, the more brain cells are destroyed.

MY MIGRAINE ODYSSEY IN CLIPART



I had migraines for nearly 20 years before I figured out how to stop them. At first I thought they were sinus headaches, and I took Allerest Sinus Pain Formula.



It didn't stop the headaches and I seemed to get rebound symptoms, so eventually I didn't take any kind of painkiller.



I tried all kinds of things for some comfort: taking a warm/hot shower; putting ice packs on my head, wrapping my head with a pair of tights, etc. etc



Many times I was up in the wee hours, watching TV to have company and to take my mind off the pain. The hostesses on QVC and HSN at those hours became familiar faces.
